Guidance Lessons

Lesson 1: Counselor Introduction

During the months of August and September I visit each child's classroom to introduce myself to all students and review my role as the school counselor.  Students learned the process for seeking my assistance when they have a concern to discuss or a problem they need help solving.

Lesson 2: Managing Emotions

Learning how to recognize and identify feelings is a key skill 4th and 5th grade students need to practice.  During this lesson we talk about what an emotion is and why it is important for people to recognize how they feel. To help us with this discussion we played a game called Emotion Candyland. Students were placed into groups where they openly expressed times when they felt different emotions.

Lesson 3: Bullying Prevention

4th and 5th grade students played Bully Prevention Jeopardy to learn what bullying is and how it can hurt those around them. We discuss how when we engage in unkind actions we can hurt other people's feelings, which we want to avoid. Students got to work together to answer questions, role play and have classroom discussions on how to prevent bullying in their school.

Lesson 4: Hygiene

4th and 5th grade students read the story Hygiene...You Stink by Julia Cook to learn what good hygiene looks like and why it's important. Students then got to do an activity where Nurse Amy brought in a black light, germ detective lotion and a germ coloring page. This allowed students to see what germs look like and how important it is to wash our hands throughout the day.
