Guidance Lessons

Lesson 1: Counselor Introduction

During the months of August and September I visit each child's classroom to introduce myself to all students and review my role as the school counselor.  Students learned the process for seeking my assistance when they have a concern to discuss or a problem they need help solving.

Lesson 2: Managing Emotions

Learning how to recognize and identify feelings is a key skill 2nd grade students need to practice.  During this lesson we talk about what an emotion is and why it is important for people to recognize how they feel.  To help us with this discussion we read the story The Little Spot of Emotion by Diane Albers and students learn about happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and calm.  Students then were able to create their own emotion spots to help them understand emotions and their differences.

Lesson 3: Bullying Prevention

2nd grade students read the story Bully B.E.A.N.S by Julia Cook to learn what bullying is and how it can hurt those around them. We discuss how when we engage in unkind actions we can hurt other people's feelings, which we want to avoid. Students then got to color their own Bully B.E.A.N.S Jar and write how they could potentially stop someone from bullying themselves or someone they know. These jars were then showcased in the Lunchroom for all Students to see for Bully Prevention Month.

Lesson 4: Hygiene

2nd grade students read the story Hygiene...You Stink by Julia Cook to learn what good hygiene looks like and why it's important. Students then got to do an activity where Nurse Amy brought in a black light, germ detective lotion and a germ coloring page. This allowed students to see what germs look like and how important it is to wash our hands throughout the day.
